Make a Wish With its tail spread into a magnificent fan, this little Pīwakawaka appears to have paused mid-performance to send a dandelion’s seeds drifting into the air. Perched on the delicate, papery shell of a cape gooseberry, the bird brings a lively sense of character to the scene, as though curiosity has turned an ordinary encounter into a small moment of theatre. The fantail’s warm rust-orange breast is set against soft black, brown and white feathers, while the dried husks and slender dandelion stem introduce fine natural textures in warm, earthy tones. Generous white space keeps the composition light and gives every detail room to stand out, from the lace-like veins of the cape gooseberry husk to the seeds floating away on an unseen breath. At 350 × 350 mm, Fantail is an easy size to place in a living area, bedroom, hallway or workspace. Its clean square format gives it presence on its own while also allowing it to sit comfortably alongside other prints from Donna O’Donoghue’s Surreal Birds collection. The clean white background and rich natural detail make this a striking standalone print, while its square format allows it to sit beautifully alongside others in the bird collection. Professionally printed by Derek’s Darkroom in New Plymouth on Moab Lasal Photo Matte, a smooth 230 gsm matte photo paper selected for its crisp detail, rich colour and low-glare finish.
