Transform an ordinary plastic vase into a stunning piece that looks like aged copper with this easy DIY project. Follow these steps to create a textured, verdigris-aged finish that will fool even the keenest eye!
Materials Used:-
Plastic vase-
Quick-patch fast-setting cement
Bronze or copper-coloured paint
Blue and green acrylic paints
White acrylic paint
Brown and orange acrylic paints
Dark antiquing wax- Paintbrushes- Sponges
Steps:
1. Prepare the Vase -
Clean the plastic vase thoroughly and spray with black paint
2. Apply a layer of quick-patch fast-setting cement for texture - Allow to dry completely.
3. Create the Base - Apply a layer of bronze or copper-coloured paint - Let it dry fully
4. Mix Verdigris Colours - Combine blue and green paints to create a verdigris colour - Add white to create lighter variations
5. Apply Verdigris Effect - Use a sponge or dry brush to dab verdigris colours onto select areas - Focus on edges, crevices, and raised spots - Build up layers gradually for a natural look
6. Create Rust Effect - Mix brown and orange paints to create a rust colour - Apply sparingly to areas where rust would naturally form - Use a dry brush or sponging technique for realism
7. Finish with Dark Wax - Apply a thin layer of dark antiquing wax over the entire surface - Pay special attention to recessed areas - Wipe away excess, leaving wax in crevices
Tips:- Work in thin layers for a more realistic effect- Don't aim for uniform coverage – natural verdigris and rust form in patches- Experiment with different colour combinations to achieve your desired look
With these steps, you'll transform a simple plastic vase into a stunning piece that looks like it's been ageing gracefully for decades. This technique can be applied to various plastic items to give them an antique copper appearance.
